With the property wrapping around in an L shape, the layout was somewhat unconventional with a lack of a dedicated entrance. Our initial step was to introduce a new porch extension that would be in keeping with the character of the existing property. This was achieved through a wide panelled front door and profiled pediment. The attention of detail is carried through to the interiors with plastered profiles and cornicing.

We also saw an opportunity to improve the daylight and aspect at first floor by introducing a large window at the landing. The luxurious feel of the staircase is therefore enhanced with these elevated view across the landscape. This is particularly effective when walking up the stairs and arriving at the landing with the picture window views revealing themselves.

The internal arrangement is semi open plan with dedicated kitchen, dining and lounge areas that are interconnected yet have sufficient division to feel like spaces of their own. The kitchen is comparatively modern compared with the rest of the house yet the details of the cornicing and choice of finishes allow this to sit comfortably at the heart of the house. Branching off this space are the dining room and snug. Rather than having a long continuous space, intermediate display and storage alcoves divide the length of the rooms in two definitive spaces.

The snug is characterised by large window openings and rooflights making for a bright and open space that has comfy homely furnishings arranged around a woodburner fireplace. The luxury interiors respond to the external alterations and visa versa. Aside from the increased floor area achieved with the porch, the reworking of the spaces demonstrates that large extensions aren’t always necessary with seeking to add value to property.
